“I really enjoyed this book. It is set in 2011 and travels back to 1929 and various points in between. Margaret returns to Edinburgh as a very last resort to stay with her elderly mother, Barbara. At a loose end she joins her mother at a funeral for an indigent or unknown person and gets wrapped up in a similar case.

Who is the elderly lady found dead in a run down shabby flat. There are no real clues to who she is and Margaret has a mammoth task ahead of her. The beauty of this book is in the writing style and delicate plot. It takes us backwards and forwards throughout the second half of the 20th century but is not hard to keep up with. It reminded me of Kate Atkinson, particularly her Jackson Brodie novels – part mystery, part family drama and lots of just brilliant observation. Most of the individual characters, sisters of one family, are actually rather tragic figures, but it’s not a depressing book.

This is the author’s first novel and is an excellent work. It is hard to fit into an exact category but if I were the author I would take that as a fantastic compliment. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.”
